They had decided that they would celebrate the milestone with a weekend away at the lakeside cabin owned by Sam’s parents. Sam’s work partner and best friend, Ryan, had just recently gotten engaged to his beautiful long-term girlfriend, Veronica. Both couples had been on many double dates together and always got on pretty well. Anna and Sam decided to invite them to come along on the weekend away, it made sense to celebrate both the anniversary and the engagement together, especially given that all four of them led extremely busy working lives.Veronica was nervous about the whole plan, she really didn’t want to impose on Anna and Sam’s anniversary weekend. She knew herself how hard it was to find alone time with Ryan recently. The law firm that he and Sam worked at was a time consuming job, and Anna had the added stress of a two year old. She spoke to Ryan about her worries but he assured her that both Anna and Sam were happy to share their cabin for the weekend. Veronica hoped that once she and Ryan were married, he would never invite other people to tag along to their anniversary celebrations.Anna offered to drive- it didn’t make sense to bring two cars when one would be more than enough for the four of them. She rang Veronica and told her that she would pick both herself and Ryan up at 8am on Friday morning. While Sam and Ryan were as close as brothers, Veronica didn’t really know Anna all that well. Both couples had spent a lot of time together but the men usually dominated the conversation. She knew that Anna had a two-year-old daughter and that she worked as a journalist for a fashion magazine, but that was about the extent of her knowledge. She thought highly of Anna though, she was a pleasant woman who worked her ass off to get to where she was, despite the fact that Sam made enough money to provide for their family. Veronica admired hardworking women. On Friday morning, Anna and Sam arrived at Veronica and Ryan’s House at exactly 8am. Veronica invited them in for a cup of coffee and some breakfast. They engaged in small talk over pancakes. Sam gladly informed them all that according to his new weather app, they were in for a warm, sunny weekend. They all ran through a checklist one last time to make sure they hadn’t forgot to pack anything important. Sam suggested that they could stop at a supermarket somewhere along the way to pick up some food and alcohol. Veronica was glad to hear mention of alcohol, for some reason she was really nervous about spending the weekend away with Anna and Sam, she’d be glad of a glass of wine to relax her nerves. They all piled into the car, Anna and Sam in the front, Veronica and Ryan in the back. Ryan ran back into the house after realising he’d forgotten to pack playing cards- himself and Sam were suckers for a game of Poker. He was only in the house of two minutes but it felt like hours to Veronica as she sat in the back silently while Anna and Sam conversed, mostly about their little girl, Cassie. Veronica had never been great at small talk- she was a very quiet and reserved woman, especially around people she was not 100% comfortable with. She was happy when Ryan finally returned to the car and they could get on the road.It was a beautiful day and the sun was beaming down on all four of them as they travelled the near 200 miles to the lake. The drive was going pleasantly, Sam and Ryan managed to keep the conversation flowing as they gossiped about their fellow work colleagues. Anna kept quiet enough as she concentrated on the road, while Veronica spent the hours taking in the breath-taking views of the coastline. Neither she nor Ryan drove so they rarely left the small town they’d grown up in.
